"Eagles"

Girls' Basketball

The 2006-2007 school year began with soaring spirits, not only because it promised to be a good year academically… but the first official sports team here at IHM was "taking flight."

During gymn classes and lunch periods the year before, a group of girls had starting shooting some hoops just for fun. By the time June rolled around, the hobby had become an serious game… and the plea for a team of their own went out to the faculty.

It wasn't until Mr. John Vail – "Coach" – offered his time and assistance that the dream became a reality. Coach Vail, father to an IHM student, made his name in the Greater Lowell Tech Basketball Hall of Fame for his excellent ability and has coached high school basketball for many years.

So with Coach Vail's expertise and experience, and a group of young players willing to learn, everything quickly fell into place.

Now in their second year of existence, the Eagles, although still "fledglings"… practice enthusiasticly three times a week after school hours at a local gym. Under the guidance of Coach Vail and two Sisters as Assistant Coaches, the girls are quickly learning the skills of the game.

Scrimmages with local schools allow them to use their new playing abilities; and with their high standards of playing and sportsmanship, they can bring those abilities to a higher level.

This first offical sports team has added a greater spirit and unifying factor not only to the team members themselves, but to the school as a whole. Often fellow classmates, faculty, family and friends will attend the scrimmages to see their improvement and join in the IHM cheering section on the bleachers to give their support.

And so, The IHM Eagles have officially taken flight …and we have high hopes that over time they will be soaring to perfection! Go Eagles!!!
