National Honor Society

The formal name of this chapter is The Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools. St. Thomas Aquinas is the special patron. Its special symbol is the yellow rose, and its colors are blue and yellow. Its motto is Noblesse Oblige.

Immaculate Heart of Mary National Honor Society and Junior Honor Society

"I pledge to always uphold the high purposes of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapter of the National Honor Society to which I have been selected, By striving to be a Catholic leader of outstanding character, aiming to excel in scholarship and serving Christ in others.

The object of this chapter is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service for the love of God and neighbor, to promote Catholic leadership, and to encourage the development of character in students of the Immaculate Heart of Mary School.

Candidates eligible for election to the Junior National Honor Society chapter must be at least in the second semester of their seventh grade and includes students up until their freshman year.

Candidates eligible for election to the National Honor Society chapter membership include members of the sophomore, junior or senior class.

Candidates eligible for election to the chapter must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2. All students who can rise in scholarship to or above such standard may be admitted to candidacy for selection to membership. Their eligibility is based on their service, leadership, and character.

Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a student. The NHS has worked hard to bring the accomplishments of outstanding students to the attention of parents, teachers, peers, and community. Chapters in more than 5,000 schools across the nation strive to give practical meaning to the Society’s goals of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The difference at IHM School is that it focuses on the accomplishment of these goals in a Catholic perspective.

These four ideals have been considered as the basis for selection. No student is inducted simply because of a high academic average. The National Honor Society strives to recognize the total student: one who excels in all these areas. The standards for selection are:

Membership, however, is more than an honor. It incurs a responsibility and an obligation to demonstrate those outstanding qualities. If the IHM chapter of the National Honor Society is to be effective and meaningful, each member must become involved. Students must strive to live up to their obligations by participating in all of the chapter meetings and projects.
Annual dues are $10.00, and go toward insignia and projects.

Projects include visiting nursing homes and the handicapped and providing entertainment and a little T.L.C. to the residents. An ongoing project this school year is assisting in mission efforts in China, through the Cardinal Kung Foundation. Students collect small donations once a month on Mission Monday, the first Monday of the month which will assist orphans, religious, and lay catechists in their underground efforts to bring the Catholic Faith to the Chinese. Another mission endeavor is gathering practical items and small toys for the poor in the Dominican Republic. Some of the NHS students have already personally been at this mission and plan to make more trips there in the future.
